Travelling by Train to Stockholm

Travelling by train to Stockholm from Europe is straightforward, with both night and day train options available from Hamburg. The night trains originate in Berlin. There are two-night trains from Hamburg to Stockholm, which are very popular, making it prudent to book tickets early.

While train travel to Stockholm is encouraged, the potential unavailability of direct trains in November and December could make this difficult.

Snälltåget

  • During December, Snälltåget offers trips only on Sundays. Therefore, the only available option is the train departing on December 1st, with a return on December 4th.
  • This train starts in Berlin, stops in Hamburg, and arrives in Stockholm the following afternoon.
  • Unfortunately, Snälltåget does not have any other trips planned for November, making early travel to Stockholm difficult.

SJ (Swedish Rail)

  • SJ offers Euronight trains daily from both Berlin (approx. € 49 for seat - € 142 for couchette) and Hamburg (approx. € 46 for seat - € 117 for couchette) to Stockholm.
  • However, track maintenance is planned for the weekend of the conference, so it is recommended to travel to Stockholm before November 30th.

Interrail

An alternative travel plan (especially if travelling within mainland Europe) is to get a 4-day Global Interrail Pass (approx. € 218 - € 283) and take the following route -

  1. Take a Deutsche Bahn regional train(s) to Copenhagen (seat reservations required)
  2. Take the Öresundståg from Copenhagen to Malmö (No seat reservations required)
  3. Take the SJ Snabbtåg from Malmö to Stockholm (seat reservations required)

Planned track maintenance during Nov 30 and Dec 1 could make train travel difficult during the weekend of the conference. Thus, it might be prudent travel earlier, ideally on Nov 28 / Nov 29.

Travelling within Stockholm

Public transport in Stockholm is managed by Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL) and is well-connected, offering many ways to get around including the metro, buses, commuter trains and even some ferries. Here’s how you can navigate the city and purchase tickets:

SL App:

Downloadable on your smartphone for quick and easy purchases.

Ticketing Stations:

Available at all metro stations including the Stockholm Central Station for direct purchases.

  • Single Journey Ticket: Costs SEK 42 (approx. €3.7) and is valid for 75 minutes across various modes of transport including buses, metros, trams, select boats, and commuter trains.
  • Travelcard Tickets: Costs vary depending on the duration, but these tickets allow for unlimited travel within Stockholm for the duration purchased -
    1. 24 hours: SEK 175 (approx €15.5)
    2. 72 hours: SEK 350 (approx €31)
    3. 7 days: SEK 455 (approx €41)

Tickets can be bought either on the app or loaded onto an SL smart card, which can be purchase for SEK 20 (approx. €1.6).

Contactless Pay as you go:

If your card has contactless (EMV or "blip") functionality or if you have digital contactless cards in digital wallets like Samsung Pay, Google Pay, Apple Pay and Fidesmo Pay, you can tap it directly on the reader. This will automatically purchase a 75-minute single journey ticket for SEK 42 (approx. €3.7). The same card can be used multiple times within the 75-minute window.

Student Discount

Discounts are available only for students enrolled in Stockholm. Please note that random checks are conducted at metro exits, and proof of student status in Stockholm is required to avoid fines. Fines for failure to provide a valid student ID can reach up to SEK 1850 plus the cost of a single journey ticket (SEK 42).

Nearest Transport Stations to the conference venue
  • Metro station: Tekniska Högskolan
  • Bus stop: Östra Station
  • Light Rail (Roslagsbanan) Station: Stockholm Östra

All these stops are conveniently located in front of KTH Entré.

Getting to the Venue from Stockholm Central Station

The easiest way to get to the venue from Stockholm Central Train Station is to take the metro (red) line number 14 that goes towards Mörby centrum or Tekniska Högskolan. Disembark at the metro stop - Tekniska Högskolan.

Getting to the Venue from Stockholm Arlanda Airport

There are many ways to get to the city centre from Stockholm Arlanda Airport. Most involve getting to the city centre, after which you switch to the metro (red line #14 towards Mörby centrum or Tekniska Högskolan) -

  • Trains
    1. Arlanda Express - This is the fastest way (taking 18 minutes) to travel both to and from the city centre to the airport. A single journey costs SEK 340 (approx €30). Trains depart regularly from the and towards the airport with no stops in between. Tickets can be bought both at the airport and online.
    2. Commuter trains operated by SL also go through Arlanda Airport. A single journey costs SEK 177(approx €15.5). If you already have an SL ticket, then a passage supplement fee of SEK 135 is applied when travelling to and from Arlanda. Tickets can be bought via the app. The advantage of this option is that the trains might stop at a station close to your hotel and the ticket purchased is also valid for travelling on the metro.
  • Busses
    1. Flygbussarna - Buses depart every 20 minutes, travelling both to and from the city centre to the airport with some stops along the way. The journey takes approximately 42 minutes and a single journey costs SEK 129 (approx €11.4).
    2. Flixbus - is an alternative option to travel to and from the airport by bus, with a similar travel time of 45 minutes. A single journey costs €7.5.
